A real gem of a camera ... but do not expect image quality miracles For parents pseudorandom In the past 6 years I used a couple of deals that have since got rid of after upgrading to DSLRs (Canon XT and 40D). For a. While I was waiting for a deal that I could carry with me wherever I want, and in particular to the parties and other social events where you bring a digital SLR is not really an option When this camera was announced it really seemed like a dream compact for me. Fast lens, wide and stable optical is ideal for low light interior. The design is elegant and beautiful, the camera is fairly compact and has all the controls you need an advanced amateur. In addition, the sensor is essentially as big as they get into the 10 MP compact cameras and almost reasonable (about a 5 megapixel many but not as bad as 12-15MP you would get at any other agreement with a similar sensor). I had the camera for a couple of weeks (and shame on Amazon for not having in stock a month after it appeared in some other department stores). I like a lot and the camera offers the most promise of Panny. Here are some of the experiences. 1. The image quality is, without doubt, and significantly better than ulracompact cameras (like Panny own FX series). However, it is still a compact camera ... ie there is visible noise even at ISO 80 and a lot of noise at ISO 400. However, noise reduction algorithms seem to be doing a good job and ISO 80 photos look great ... sometimes almost like a DSLR. And even at ISO 400 most shots are good enough to keep. In general the output of this camera is comparable to my 40D at 8 times the ISO (which is 80 on LX3 is about 640 to 400 40D and LX3 is a bit better than 3200 in 40D). Fortunately, with the fast lens and image stabilization which is almost never need to use above 400 ISO. 2. The camera is very responsive and the autofocus is fast and seems accurate. 3. Changing ISO through the menus is a bit of a pain, but a variety of useful ISO regimes provide. Overall control of all the options is not easy ... but I think that's the contract you get with such a small camera with a large LCD screen. Updated: is possible to simplify ISO changing by reassigning a button for this purpose. The downside of this is that now reviewing pictures becomes more complicated. 4. Change the aspect ratio of the lens is more useful than I thought ... saves a lot of crops. 5. Shoot in RAW + JPEG is fast enough to be usable. 6. The camera is quite bulky bit of what appears (and the given dimensions are misleading because they do not include the lens and other protrusions from the main part of the body). No shirt pocket, both in size and weight ... but fits well in a jacket pocket or purse. 7. The macro capability of the camera is really excellent. 8. Having customizable user presets regimes in the dial is very useful and this is not a luxury, even DSLR Canon XSi (shame on Canon!)
In general, it is a great compact camera: in my opinion, undoubtedly the best on the market by a wide margin (I have studied very thoroughly the market). It is in the same league as Canon G-series (which I had when were the best and really liked), but it suits my current needs much more than a Canon Gx. I also think it's a real bargain at around $ 400. But it remains a compact camera with a sensor area of 1 / 8 of most DSLRs and 1 / 20 full frame (mostly pro) DSLR. So expecting miracles as close to DSLR quality or usable ISO 800 + might be disappointed. ================================================== ================ A quick update in response to a comment: 1. In the broader context of the capture is a significant distortion, especially notable in the regime of 16:09. There are also noticeable loss of sharpness in the corners. This may not look good in some pictures (as if a straight face, like someone's at or near the border), but nothing too bad for most shots. 2. HD video is very good for a compact. No zoom, auto focus and sometimes exposure adjustments are not very smooth. So I do not recommend treating it as a video camera. But video is usually given detailed and reasonably smooth (and not at all at 30 fps). I just did a quick comparison with Canon HF10 dedicated compact camcorder (which is as good as they are these days). In bright light LX3 I can not match the 1080p detail of Canon. But the relatively weak light is almost as good. LX3 also has a great advantage in wide angle. All consumer camcorders have dedicated wide-angle 40 mm around which is much worse than the LX3 24mm.
Another impression I have with LX3 and certainly had no other compact is that it is a tool worth learning and investing some time and experimentation. My photos with this camera keep improving even the first decent already.

================================================== ===================== Update December 17: Finally Photoshop Lightroom and started to recognize LX3 raws. The quality of my photos is now even higher: colors much more enjoyable and less noise reduction "spots." Overall, this camera delivers results far beyond what you believe is possible for a compact camera. It still has my highest recommendation.
Update January 27, 2009. The most annoying thing about this camera is its lens cap. Having to remove what is slowing down. Together by a string left hanging ... which detracts from the aesthetics of the camera and can add a little extra movement. But the chain is likely to miss ... and I have not seen any replacement for sale. Anyway, fortunately, creative peoples found that Ricoh LC-1 lens adapter can be easily modified for use on this camera. I've done this and it works much better than the original cover. I uploaded some pictures of the result of product images. Use Google to find instructions for modification.
