first big step S. Chandrasekar For those who do not know, the Panasonic G1 is the first (hopefully of many) camera that adheres to the new micro 4 / 3 format. What is exciting about this? All SLR cameras use mirrors, prisms and optical viewfinder so the photographer can see what he / she holds "through the lens". SLR has remained the de facto standard for most serious photographers because it seems that the whole viewfinder concept so appealing. The micro 4 / 3 eliminates the mirrors and prisms, and replaces the optical viewfinder of an SLR camera viewfinder. This allows the cameras that adhere to the standard to be much smaller (and wide angle lenses designed for this assembly to be smaller too). In the real review ...
The G1's viewfinder is the first time I've seen that is remotely useful. Although not as good as the OVF in my 5D, it is considerably better than the OVF in my older 350D. The first look through the viewfinder will impress anyone who has not used a full frame camera before. While there is a noticeable delay (especially when moving the camera around ... a delay of one tenth of a second, perhaps), the fact that you can see a live histogram in the VF makes the lag completely off. Even better, ventricular fibrillation can increase the gain of the screen in low light conditions so you can actually see what you're shooting (it gets grainy, but it is better to do nothing at all). Finally, when it involves the manual approach, the view in the viewer zoom in the subject automatically allowing the perfect manual focus adjustments every time! Undoubtedly, this is the best interchangeable lens camera on the market, if you are interested in the focus manually.
The LCD screen of the joint design is another option that is on the spot! Why have not other manufacturers caught "Live View" is completely useless without an articulating LCD? The change in the electronic viewfinder LCD is as simple as putting the eye near the viewfinder. A sensor that detects when not in use. The LCD screen is not super-resolution 5DMkII new or D700, but has twice the resolution of my old 5D.
This is the pocket camera? Not a chance. However, not much larger than the largest (with kit lens) than modern superzoom point and shoot cameras. I bought it because I thought I was going to my 5D (with 24-70 f / 2. 8) in the house more often than not, because I do not want to carry much weight. The G1, by comparison, is a joy to hold and carry. For me, size is perfect. Any small and controls are unusably small. Any larger and the camera will start to resemble smaller DSLRs. Side note: The kit lens is to see to believe ... that is so small. Even the 45-200 lens (90-400) is not much larger than the kit lenses for APS-C or FF cameras (let alone compared with the monstrous 100-400 lens canon makes).
The noise is reasonable. I do not go beyond ISO1250 for prints with the G1. ISO1600 and 3200 are more than useful for web display (which is how most of my photos shown). I never understood how to print ISO6400 prints are suddenly required for all cameras ... How many people actually print a large number of images anyway? Reduced the size of Facebook or Picasaweb, I imagine that a ISO6400 G1 image would be more than enough.
What I dislike is the lack of large aperture lenses for the format. You can buy adapters to use standard 4 / 3 lenses, but most 3.4 lenses are probably larger than their counterparts micro43 future (and AF does not work with many of them). There are also adapters for Leica M mount (I'm trying to convince my boyfriend that Leica lenses are a better investment than the stock market right now ... but do not think she is buying it). The depth of field is greater micro43 and because the smaller sensor, so it will be difficult to achieve isolation theme of the photographs until large aperture prime lenses available.
I am very excited about the future of this format. Panasonic has promised a G1HD person in the first half of this year (a G1 with video capabilities). In addition, three new lenses have been announced: a 14.7 f/1.7 f / 4, 14-140, and best of all, a 20 mm cake! Olympus also showed a concept of a camera micro43 seemed bigger than a small point and shoot. The future is exciting!
