Some image stabilization issues

REVIEW UPDATED for brand spanking new FIRMWARE
The optical image stabilization system for this lens didn't work properly when 1st released. Multiple users tested it on multiple cameras and in most cases it created a severe double image with shutter speeds between 1/100 and 1/300. Tested on each GH2 and G3 with same results. It seems to be shutter vibration inflicting the OIS system to detect a false movement and then decide to correct for this false movement. Bottomline, users were finding pictures are higher after they flip OIS off.
For intensive details and check pictures look within the Micro Four Thirds forum at Amazon's partner website dpreview.com. additionally check the terribly long thread within the Lumix Lifestyle UK forum.
Panasonic released a brand new firmware for this lens on 11/17. It seems to possess considerably improved the OIS for several users. The shutter speed of 1/160 still seems to be a weak purpose, particularly on the G3, however the "double image problem" has been resolved at most settings for many users. it's not utterly gone away, however. Again, the forums referenced higher than have countless users tests with each the previous and new firmware in them.
I hope to run comparison tests between this lens and also the 45-200 and can update the review once I have the chance to try to to thus. Optically, while not the OIS problems, the lens seems excellent. I hope to upgrade this to 5 star review once when a lot of testing.
FINAL REVIEW UPDATE
Well, I've currently had the chance to run tests with this lens myself using the lens FW1.1 on a GH2 with body FW1.1 as well. The result's that the OIS performance isn't spectacular. Shooting at 175mm there's still an occasional double image drawback around 1/160th shooting speeds. At that shutter speed the OIS is barely slightly higher than hand holding. At slower shutter speeds the OIS is far higher than hand holding. At higher shutter speeds i believe you're higher turning off the OIS. i would say the performance is "adequate" as so much as OIS goes. it's a little of a disappointment, within the vary of 1/350th to 1/160th where you'd expect the OIS to be doing you the foremost smart and supplying you with sharp pictures it extremely does not facilitate abundant compared to IS off. Where it will assistance is at terribly slow speeds (say 1/40th) where you have got no expectation of a pointy image in any respect however it will offer you good if not "tack sharp" results that are vastly higher than while not IS.
Comparison with the 45-200 is tough. The 45-200 OIS system isn't spectacular either however many of us are reporting they make a come back results with it. In my testing it absolutely was onerous to inform, however i'd additionally provide the nod to the 45-200. the problem is that the 45-200 may be a heavier lens and thus we'd expect it to be held a lot of stably to begin with. primarily i believe compared to the 45-200 the 45-175 IS is certainly not higher, maybe identical however a lot of probably worse despite being marketed as superior.
Finally, to image quality. The 45-175 is on the full a pleasant sharp contrasty lens. That said, I shoot landscapes at infinity focus and at that focus distance the 45-200 is really sharper, particularly at the sides. i think at moderate focus distances the 45-175 is maybe superior, and this can be where the majority shoot, except for my uses the 45-200 was truly higher.
I'm torn on what rate the lens within the finish. i am getting to follow 3 stars as I think about given it's suppose to be a premium product and is at a premium worth compared to the 45-200 it simply is no higher as so much as image quality. it's smaller and incorporates a variety of nice options however i actually feel it doesn't live up to its billing. for several people i believe it'd be honest to decision it a four star product, undoubtedly not 5, however i am sticking with 3 as personally i am underwhelmed by the lens.
